I’ve teamed up with a good friend Tracie Mason Holton Purposeful Practices Project to start a joint walking and fundraising team for the October 1st Seattle Out of the Darkness Walk for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP). We are BOTH survivors of suicide and advocates for suicide prevention and mental health awareness. Tracie lost her younger sister to mental illness & suicide in March 2009. AND I lost a life-long friend to mental illness & suicide in December 2010.
Yes, it is early BUT we are going BIG here like I said. Here’s what we’re planning, and how you might be able to help:
1. If you live in the Seattle area, please consider joining our Walking Team. You can get more info on our Team Page.
2. If you are a family-owned or family-friendly business and would like to get involved in our fundraising efforts, please contact me at firstname.lastname@example.org.
We plan to provide “donation thank you gifts” to those who donate funds to our team. (For example, my necklace business EllieAdorn will provide one free mama necklace to anyone who donates $25-$49.) We’re seeking donation thank you gifts for people who donate $50-$99 and $100+. We’re also planning other fundraising events in the coming months such as an online auction, a yoga event, and more.
If becoming involved is something that interests you, and falls in line with your company’s mission, we will be offering promotional opportunities such as blog posts, social media outreach, etc. And of course you’ll be doing a lot of good for a very important cause.
3. Make a financial donation. OK, there’s lots of time for this before October 1st. Right now, we’re really in the recruiting phase. But if you’re inspired to, please feel free to donate to one or more of our team members here. (Right now its just me & Tracie.) Any amount is greatly appreciated, no matter how small.
The AFSP is at the forefront of research, education and prevention initiatives designed to reduce loss of life from suicide. With more than 33,000 lives lost each year in the U.S. and over one million worldwide, the importance of AFSP’s mission has never been greater. Any contribution will help the work of AFSP, and all donations are 100% tax deductible.
Thank you for reading. Let’s fight the stigma of mental illness and help prevent death by suicide.
You are NOT alone. You ARE loved.
