I just baked the most delicious cookies this weekend. Seriously ridiculously delicious Oatmeal Chocolate Chip cookies that are ALREADY gone. Sad face.
Lucky for me, Milkmakers sent me two bags of mix so I have another one waiting in the wings. Yay!
So, you might be thinking, what the heck are Milkmakers Lactation Cookies?
According to Milkmakers, “Lactation cookies are a delicious, nutritious and convenient way to support breast milk production. The oats, brewer’s yeast and flax seed in each cookie helps moms replenish key nutrients and support milk supply.
Oats are eaten by nursing moms worldwide to boost breast milk supply, and are a nutritional powerhouse, providing plenty of whole grains, fiber, iron, and an abundance of healthy vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants.
Brewer’s yeast is a traditional herbal remedy used to stimulate and increase the production of breast milk and is a rich source of the B-vitamins and amino acids essential for nursing moms and their babies.
Flax seed provides an abundance of omega-3 fatty acids, necessary for brain development, which can be passed from mother to baby through breast milk.”
It is true that there are natural foods and herbs that are believed to help breast milk production. A low milk supply can occur for a variety of reasons so if you feel you may have issues please contact a professional lactation consultant. I saw awesome lactation consultants at Evergreen Hospital shortly after having Ellie when she was quickly losing weight. It didn’t end up being a supply issue for me (it was an improper suck) but I was SO glad to get the help we needed very quickly.
From my own experience nursing Ellie for over 3 years and 3 months, I recommend that you drink plenty of water, eat a healthy nutrient dense, high protein diet, get lots of skin to skin contact, and try not to supplement with formula if you can help it. Taking care of yourself is key. Breastfeeding is a supply and demand proposition: the more you breastfeed, the better your supply.
What happens if you are not breastfeeding and eat Milkmakers cookies?
When I posted about baking the cookies over the weekend, one friend on Twitter asked the above very important question.
The quick answer is these are just cookies. Anyone can eat and will enjoy. They are SO good, just ask my husband and kids. Dip them in a little coffee from the beloved Keurig, and they’re even more divine We scarfed them down quick!
If you are breastfeeding, the wonderful ingredients just might help you. I don’t have a supply issue so I personally can’t speak to that. But if you are, you’ll have to try these out and see if it works for you. If nothing else, you and your family will enjoy super yummy cookies.
The Oatmeal Chocolate Chip cookie mix that I received from Milkmakers is actually their Gluten-free and Dairy-free version, since we are a gluten-free family. They also sell a regular mix, and you can purchase pre-made Milkmakers cookies if you don’t want to bake them yourself. Flavors available are Oatmeal Chocolate Chip (like we had) and Oatmeal Raisin.
Good news! Milkmakers is giving away 2 Bags of Lactation Cookie Mix (of the winner’s choice) on Motherhood Unadorned. Choose from regular mix or the gluten-free, dairy-free version that we sampled. Yummy! Retail Value is $14.99 to $17.99 per bag, or up to $35.98 total.
Disclaimer: Milkmakers provided me with 2 bags of their gluten-free lactation cookie mix for the purposes of this review, and is providing 2 additional bags as a giveaway. The opinions above are 110% my own as always. This post includes affiliate links.
