Back in the spring, we were at a friend’s house and my husband John and my 5-year-old son Ronin got to play Skylander Giants for the first time. Being a game developer himself (with over 12 years industry experience), John was surprised that he hadn’t realized until then that Skylanders is exactly the type of Action RPG (Role Playing Game) he loves to play, but with the added twist that real-life character figures are a part of the game. When characters are placed on a “portal” they are transported into the interactive environment.
John was immediately drawn in. He could play the game over and over again, with entirely different gameplay for each character played. And there are A LOT of characters, each infused with loads of personality.
Plus John said, “The game is just very polished. Its got good writing, good voice acting, well done graphics, controls are crisp, cameras are well done, great level design. They hit on all cylinders when it comes to game quality. They also do a really good job of hitting all the types of gamers, from explorers, collectors, min/maxers.”
The kids (both Ronin and 3-year-old Ellie) were also entralled right away. They love the character figurines. My kids are collectors by nature, especially Ronin, so the idea of having Skylanders action figures to collect are very exciting to them.
And they play with them, A LOT, which I love. We know how often toys are purchased, played with once and then never used again. That is not the case with their Skylanders. From tea parties to other funny scenarios, they’re always using the figures for imaginative play. They also love placing them on the portal and hearing each character’s funny catch phrase.
Ronin can play the game all by himself now and really loves it. Ellie is learning the controls, and can pretty easily play battle mode against her brother. They often play the levels together and Ronin helps her along the way.
