Ellie and I have been checking out a brand new iPad app that I’d like to share with you. Topo’s Piano is a lovely interactive storybook for kids ages 2-6, created by well known children’s book illustrator Harvey Stevenson.
The story, which follows TOPO and his love of music from a flooded drain-pipe to the crowded stage in Paris, includes an original musical soundtrack that is really quite calming and beautiful. In fact, the first thing that came to mind as we’ve been reading/listening/playing, is that it’s a natural for winding down at bed time. The art style and the music could definitely be described as dreamy.
I love how this unique storybook allows Ellie (4 1/2) to explore music through interactivity. She “plays” the instruments she discovers on each page of the story, whether that’s popping bubbles, lifting a bucket, swinging a lamp, or even playing Topo’s piano made of found things … “a this and a that, bits of string and a screw or two.” The instrument sounds are a part of the story.
