I’ve had a life long love affair with the Bloody Mary.
Back in the day, well before marriage and kids I went to college in New Orleans, a city I just adore. It’s a part of my soul, and so is the incredible food and libations. I have such memories hunting down the perfect Bloody Mary while I was living there, and during my trips over the years.
Last month I actually got to travel back after a 5-year drought from that glorious city. John didn’t get to go with me, which sucks. I’d really like to take him to some day. But we’ve only left the kids overnight once, and we decided this wasn’t the right time for a longer kid-free vacation. So I went with a bunch of college friends for jazz fest.
And the hunt for the perfect Bloody Mary began.
Day one it was off to the store to pick up ingredients for our rental house. Then, as we visited so many of our old haunts Downtown, in the Garden District and Uptown, a Bloody Mary was in order at each stop.
We had such a blast! And in an ironic twist, I get to go back again in June with some high school friends. A completely random coincidence, but apparently 2015 was meant to be the year of New Orleans for me. I swear I don’t normally get to travel this much.
It was so much fun re-living the glory days, and drinking like a college kid again. Yeah, I said kid. I’m old. And I had honestly forgotten how much I enjoyed a good Bloody Mary. How perfect it is day or night. A sort of healthy-ish alcoholic refreshment with a lot of spice … and pickled green beans. You cannot forget the green beans. Seriously, I can’t stress that enough.
So upon my return to reality, I was happy to relive my trip with John and attempt to recreate this New Orleans refreshment icon for him. See I’m even wearing my New Orleans Jazz Fest T-shirt!
Of course there had to be a twist. We boosted our own version with the new V8 + Energy 100% Vegetable Juice. New Orleans Style Bloody Mary Boosted.
This new V8 + Energy drink has the natural energy of green tea. I was just telling John how I wanted to reduce the amount of soda I drink, but many afternoons I really need a little extra kick to help get me through the day. Man I’m tired a lot! How nice to get the extra energy I so very much need, and servings of veggies and fruit too.
V8 V-Fusion + Energy is available at Walmart in several new fruit flavors too:
- Pomegranate Blueberry
- Peach Mango
- Orange Pineapple
- Black Cherry
- Diet Strawberry Lemonade
- Diet Cranberry Raspberry
I love a good, thick and spicy Bloody Mary so that’s exactly what I’ve created.
Ingredients (per drink):
V8 + Energy 100% Vegetable Juice (1, 8 oz. can)
1 shot vodka (of choice)
1 tablespoon worcestershire sauce
Spice Mix: 1/4 tsp sea salt, 1/2 tsp black pepper, 1/2 tsp coriander
4-10 drops of Tabasco hot sauce to taste
Garnish: Spicy pickled green beans, olives, celery & lemon slice
Mix 8 0z. V8 + Energy, vodka, worcestershire sauce, spice mix and Tabasco in a fancy glass.
Add a bit of ice but not too much because you do not want a watered down Bloody Mary. You want to see a thick beverage filled with lots of pepper!
