Oh Back to School lunch. We’ve been back in school a little over a week, and I’m back in the swing making school lunches. It’s one of my most hated school-time activities. Both kids have allergies so we can’t purchase school lunches, even if we wanted to. So every night (or sometimes morning if I’ve been lazy) I make lunches for the kids. Ellie started Kindergarten so I’ve added a 2nd lunch to the routine.
Because I’m really not a fan of making them, I spend as little time as possible putting them together. I don’t do fancy shaped sandwiches or bento boxes. I actually envy the moms who enjoy doing that kind of thing. I think the kids would be excited to open up a unique lunch, and it might encourage Ellie who is SO dang picky to actually eat her food.
One of her favorite things to eat is cottage cheese, but it can certainly be messy for school lunches, especially if the container isn’t air tight or she has trouble getting it closed after eating.
The kids love character lunch boxes, water bottles and containers, so last year I tried to buy Ronin a Pokemon-themed plastic container for his lunch. It was shipped from China and took forever to get here. The moment I opened it and tried to click open the sides, the plastic snapped! Ugh. So this year I decided to create special themed containers for them using high quality, air tight Snapware plastic containers.
What you’ll need:
For the Pokeball container I’m using 286mL Small Short Round Snapware
For the Minecraft Creeper container I’m using 1.26L Medium Short Square Snapware
duct tape in green, red, black and white
a permanent marker
Pokemon-inspired Pokeball DIY Duct Tape Snapware
Using red duct tape, stick it to the top of the round Snapware. Draw a half circle using your marker, then cut it out. Cutting duct tape with scissors can be a challenge, but the tip is to make sure that you stretch it taut while cutting.
To create the center white circle, trace a quarter on white duct tape and cut. Then stick it on a strip of place duct tape and cut the center black Pokeball shape with scissors. Again, be sure to keep the tape taut while cutting.
Then stick! I knew I’d be using this one for cottage cheese so thought it would be clever to leave the other side clear instead of cutting a white half circle for the other side. When I showed Ellie, she said “The Pokeball captured the cottage cheese!” If you’re a fan of Pokemon you’ll know what that means. 🙂
My kids are also obsessed with Minecraft so I thought I’d also create a Creeper storage kit as well. I think it turned out so fun! When John saw it he said, “I want one of those in my lunch!”
Minecraft-inspired Creeper DIY Duct Tape Snapware
Cut three strips of green duct tape. Again, but sure to keep them taut. It helps to stick it over the side of the container to cut smoothly.
It takes 4 pieces of black duct tape to create the face. Cut two square eyes and three rectangles (one thick and 2 thin) for the nose/mouth.
Be sure to stick the tape softly at first and get it lined up, so you can remove it and re-position it if necessary. Once it’s in the right place, press it down strongly. Also, while the duct tape will stay on with some moisture, you definitely won’t want to wash the lids in the dishwasher. I recommend a hand wash of the inside only.
