So I decided to create a little project to represent our favorite superhero rivalry, and of course I put Iron man on top. Ha! Check out how to make these stackable DIY sharpie mugs. I just love how they turned out.
DIY #TeamCap and #TeamIronman Mugs
WHAT YOU’LL NEED:
Plain White Ceramic Mugs (Mine are stackable)
Color Permanent Markers
Captain America & Iron Man Stencil Printable (see below)
Nail Polish Remover and cotton swabs (for mistakes)
Step 1: Print Logos on Cardstock or Photo Paper.
Click on this image and “save as”. Print on 4 x 6 photo paper or card stock to create your stencil for your #TeamCap and #TeamIronman mugs. You definitely want to use a heavy paper so that you have a strong edge for your homemade stencil.
Step 2: Tape and Color Bottom Stripe of Mug.
If you have a mug like mine with a delineated bottom, it’s easy to color in the stripe on your mug. But if you don’t, use tape to create a line and color your mug below the line, blue for Captain America and red or yellow for Ironman.
Step 3: Create Stencils.
You’ll want to cut out the images to use as your “stencil” to trace the shapes needed onto your mugs.
Step 4: Color Front of Mugs.
For Captain America, I cut out the blue circle/star first to draw the larger circles in red. Then I cut out the white circle and used it to draw the interior lines shown below. Lastly, cut out the star to trace and color in the center.
For Iron Man, cut out the outter shape of the mask, tape it to the mug and trace in red. Then cut out the interior gold shape and tape it to the mug, then trace in red. Lastly you’ll cut out the eye shapes, tape to your mug and trace in yellow. Then fill everything in with red and yellow as shown below.
If you make any mistakes while coloring, you can easily fix with nail polish remover.
Step 5: Color Back of Mugs.
It’s time to freehand your hashtags!
Step 6: Let Dry & Bake!
Place dry mugs in a cool oven (do not pre-heat oven). Set oven to 350 degrees and bake with door closed for 30 minutes. After 30 minutes, turn off your oven but leave the mugs inside until the oven cools down naturally. Remove cool mugs from oven.
Step 7: Acrylic Sealer.
This step is optional. For extra protection, and to enable you to wash your mugs in the dishwasher, the last step is to spray with acrylic sealer. Mod Podge makes a “dishwasher safe” version but it is not food safe, so make sure that you cover the inside and lip of your mug before spraying. I’m right handed so I put the larger artwork on the outside so that I won’t be drinking on the area where the artwork is sprayed with the sealer.
Let dry 24 hours before use.
Step 8: Enjoy!
The yellow definitely changed color when baked but I think the orange gold is perfect for the Iron Man mask! But keep in mind that some colors may change during the baking process.
