I’m a bit obsessed with Harry Potter. This is me from Halloween last year in my Ginny Weasley Quidditch costume I made for myself. It was so fun to make this jersey with a shirt I purchased and iron-on vinyl. No special tools needed!
Last year we had the opportunity to visit the Wizarding World of Harry Potter in Orlando for the very first time, which was such a thrill for me! Here we are in Olivander’s Wand Shop.
How did this obsession start? It was right before the 4th book came out. I was not a reader at all. Seriously, I did not read one bit. My friends were going on and on and on about this Harry Potter book series and it was like white noise to me. But I hung out with them a lot, being single and carefree, so I heard about it constantly. I finally decided to read Book 1 and shockingly–at least to me–I fell in love. I slammed the first 3 right in time for the 4th Book to arrive, and then like the rest of the free world I spent the next several years waiting for book after book.
By the time I met John, I was in the Harry Potter obsessed camp and I made him read the series as well. (You’re welcome John!) I’d watch the films the night they came out, sometimes even going to the midnight showings. And when the final book arrived, John and I stood in line at midnight to grab our copies and sped home reading late into the night.
I’m now and avid reader and I absolutely credit this incredible fanciful book series with unlocking my love of reading, which is why I keep trying to encourage my kids to read them. They’re not quite fully ready for them yet, although Ronin and I have started Book 1.
Harry Potter Crafts
I also do a bit of crafting and jewelry making around here, and recently was contacted by Adams Media the publisher of The Unofficial Guide to Crafting the World of Harry Potter by Jamie Harrington, which just released this month. It includes 30 bewitching crafts and DIY projects that celebrate the magic of Harry Potter’s world. With a little creativity, readers can transfigure simple supplies into everything from Golden Snitch Necklaces to Monster Book of Monsters Tablet Covers to Butterbeer Lip Balm, great for summer vacation activities or Harry Potter theme parties.
One of my favorites, that I really want to try out are the Wand Pencils! Aren’t these just adorable and perfect for Harry Potter party favors. They are so darling! I also love the style of the book, which is also full of fantastical photos and language. Fans of Harry Potter crafts will be charmed by this book!
