Teaching Kids about Money: The Piggy Box

The Piggy Box Disclosure

Teaching Kids about Saving and Budgeting Money with the Piggy Box AD

I’ve always felt like I didn’t learn enough about money and budgeting in school. We spend so much time learning about many other important subjects but after leaving school I really couldn’t tell you how to buy a house, or use a credit card, or even just budget my money wisely. But truly money management is one of the most important lessons a kid can learn. And I think it’s never too young to start learning.

Esther, founder and creator of The Piggy Box agrees.

The idea for The Piggy Box began when her young son Jacob started a trash bin collection business, bringing in their neighbors’ trash cans after trash collection day. As his business grew, so did his income and it quickly became apparent that his traditional piggy bank was inadequate. Not only did the bills not fit, he also had no idea how much money he had.  And with that, The Piggy Box began to take shape.

The Piggy Box is organized into three drawers: SAVE, SPEND and GIVE with removable dividers for kids to sort and organize their bills by denominations. There are separate compartments for coins and bills, and the companion iOs app helps kids and their parents keep track of their money.

This simple system teaches kids sound budgeting principles and also instills the idea of giving. The Piggy Box is available is several styles that are just so cute. Order The Piggy Box with code MOTHERUNADORN15 for a 15% off discount.

In addition to those above, you can also purchase the Treasure Chest style that Ronin chose or the all white box that Ellie picked to decorate herself. Funny story though, she got her box over a month ago and has agonized about what to draw on it ever since. She wanted erasable markers. Sorry dear! She has wanted to figure out the perfect thing and just could not decide. So I suggested she cover it with one of her drawings on paper until she figures out what she wants to permanently create. We taped on this drawing she did of Ariel and her sea friends, and it’s so cute!

The Piggy Box iOs app that accompanies the box has cute graphics and is very simple to use with tasks that correspond to the three drawers: SAVE, SPEND and GIVE, allowing kids to keep a digital record of how much money they have in each drawer. They can add and withdraw any time they need to. My numbers kid Ronin was definitely intrigued and started adding up his money immediately. Before this he kept count on paper and those papers always got lost.

We really like this product a lot. The kids love their boxes, particularly since counting their money is one of their favorite things to do. The Piggy Box is a smart system for teaching kids about money, and the box itself is very high quality. It’s recommended for ages 4 and up.

I’d pick the treasure chest because my son’s 13 and it looks “old enough” for him. lol I should’ve taught him a long time ago, but there’s not better time than the present than to start!
