Earlier this year, I walked 17-miles with thousands of people in Washington DC, and it was life changing. To push myself to not only raise a minimum of $1,000 (I ended up raising $3,919 thanks to so many of you) but also actually walk that far (from 7pm to 5am) when I am not a runner/walker, was a huge challenge for me. But it was one of the most worthwhile things I’ve ever done in my life.
Walking the streets of DC, seeing the monuments and capital buildings lit up at night, walking with others who have experienced loss and truly understand mental illness was indescribable. Holding each other when we got emotional, pushing each other when we got tired (it is overnight after all!) which of course is kind of inevitable. It was just a amazing experience.
And to do it here, in my home city, makes me smile and get butterflies. Suicide is a painful topic of course, but doing something about it brings me such purpose. Sharing that purpose with others is incredibly rewarding. Often times hard, but so worth it. If you’d like to consider walking with me, please feel free to comment or email me directly cristicomes(at)gmail(dot)com with any questions. If you walk, you are required to raise a minimum of $1,000, students $700. You can also volunteer as crew for the walk without the fundraising requirement (which I’ve been told by friends is also very rewarding). One friend who lost her father to suicide was on the cheer team at the finish line in 2013. It was such a joy to give her a hug after finishing, particularly since I had her dad’s name on my shirt. How amazing is that?
If you register for the WA State Chapter Team, 25% of your fundraising will go to our local chapter. The remainder to AFSP National. We already have 3 members!

Thank you so much for all of your support over the past few years. I know its not always easy to keep donating when you’ve just contributed this year or previously, but every little bit helps. Even a few dollars would be so appreciated. I’ll probably be planning another online auction to raise funds for my walk, so if you are a business and might like to become involved, please keep that in mind. Thank you!
