Skylanders Skystones Card Game and Other Party Ideas

My kids (and husband) have a dear love of Skylanders. We’ve been fans for about two years and in that time have collected all four games and a ton of the characters and traps. John, being the game developer he is, instantly took to the video game,  and the kids who are also natural born gamers, followed his lead and never looked back.

One of their favorite things to do is play Skylanders with Daddy until the Skystones mini-game pops up.  They have so much fun playing it together. It’s truly Daddy bonding time, and I love seeing it. So I was so excited to hear that General Mills was introducing an exclusive Skylanders Skystones card game. Frankly, I’m kind of surprised a board game like this wasn’t created sooner. It’s such a natural.

Hidden inside specially marked Big G cereal boxes, fans will find free Skystones cards playable on the game board found on the back of the cereal box. I cut one out and pasted it to yellow card stock below just to make it more fun. Then I decided to set it up to surprise the kids, and boy were they excited. “A new Skylanders game! Skystones! We love Skystones!” Ellie really got into tearing open the Skystones card packages. Haha!

They spent some time analyzing the cards and figuring out which “rare” ones were in the packs. Some of them are sparkly so of course my little gamers consider those special.

There are four collectible game card sets (one in each cereal box,) with 40 cards in all. Did I mention how much my kids like to collect things? This is so very much up their ally.

There was lots of excitement as I read through the included rules and we got started.  It’s a fun little game of strategy that I think your kids will enjoy, and I bet you’ll love the price tag. So worth it, because they definitely keep wanting to play. In fact, after bath even tonight they were begging us to play just a couple rounds of Skystones. It’s a battle of numbers, so it’s cool to see Ellie at 5 years old doing just as well as her older brother.

The Skystones game night brought back memories of Ronin’s 6th birthday party that had a Skylanders theme, so I thought I’d also share a couple Skylanders-inspired ideas for your next party. One of my favorites was this handmade t-shirt that he wore. He looks so young here!

And I also made this Skylanders-inspired portal cake. Click here for full instructions. The kids thought it was pretty awesome and I must say I was proud of how it turned out.

More Info about General Mills Skystones Game

There are four Skystones collectible game card sets and each includes a downloadable code to unlock characters in the mobile Skylanders game. My kids of course thought that was cool too. You can find the game in participating Big G brands including Honey Nut Cheerios, Frosted Cheerios, Fruity Cheerios, Reese’s Puffs, Cookie Crisp, Lucky Charms, Trix and Cinnamon Toast Crunch.

Skylanders Coupon Tip! The Skylanders marked cereals boxes also include coupons inside for Skylanders game starter sets and figures.

Look for more special offers and free prizes inside boxes of General Mills cereals throughout the year.

Now you may know that my kids are gluten free, and right now the participating Skylanders General Mills cereals are not, but there is exciting news that Cheerios will officially become gluten-free very soon. (More details are on their site.) I was so excited to hear that! In the meantime, my mom is visiting from Florida because my brother and his wife just had a sweet baby girl, so we’re sharing our cereal with her. Honey Nut Cheerios is always a favorite! We can’t wait to have our own gluten-free version.

Are you or your kids Skylanders fans? What do you love about Skystones?

My son just loves anything deemed ‘collectible.’ It’s fun for him to see what he still needs to add to the collection.
