Disclosure: I received tickets to an advanced screening of Avengers Age of Ultron to facilitate this review. All opinions are my own.
Avengers: Age of Ultron is a highly entertaining film, full of fast action and striking humor. We thoroughly enjoyed it. But before I share more of my thoughts, I wanted to start with a brief synopsis from Marvel Studios.
When Tony Stark tries to jumpstart a dormant peacekeeping program, things go awry and earth’s mightiest heroes, including Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, The Incredible Hulk, Black Widow and Hawkeye, are put to the ultimate test as the fate of the planet hangs in the balance. As the villainous Ultron emerges, it is up to The Avengers to stop him from enacting his terrible plans, and soon uneasy alliances and unexpected action pave the way for an epic and unique global adventure.
Epic is a great word to describe this film. I’m such a fan of Marvel for bringing together so many amazing actors, weaving a story that links both film and television. I’m fully caught up within the Marvel cinematic universe so it was a huge treat to see this film at an early 3D screening. I absolutely recommend seeing it in 3D. The action is incredible. I’ll definitely be seeing it again just to catch all action I’m sure I missed.
Other than the awesome action, which of course we expect, the thing that struck me the most about this film was the humor. I felt like I was laughing the whole time. We all know that Tony Stark is known for his clever sense of humor, but the writers went a lot further and this terrific ensemble was up to the challenge. There’s a running joke about Captain America’s old school “goodie goodie-ness” that had me laughing out loud. Watch your language kids!
The development of relationships was quite strong in this film. The Avengers and their trust of each other is put to the test in so many ways. I loved seeing a strong(er) bond forming between The Hulk (A.K.A. Dr. Banner) and Black Widow (A.K.A. Natasha).
We also get to see a glimpse into the real life of Hawkeye, who has always been quite a mystery. His story and character really evolves and develops in this film. Who knew?!
Thor’s Hammer used as a comedic element (that you may have seen in the previews) comes full circle and adds another really terrific element of humor and surprise. I won’t say more as I don’t want to spoil things for you.
New characters emerge that add some really interesting and unique superpowers to the story. Twins Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver help wrap in the story line between Avengers and Marvel’s Agents of Shield (one of my favorite TV shows right now) and create some emotional and action-packed moments.
And of course there’s Ultron himself, forged from a program intended for peace that goes so so wrong. This character actually helps take us deeper into the mind and motives of Tony Stark, which was really intriguing. Ultron not only threatens the Avengers physically, but also mentally and emotionally, giving the story a lot of depth.
Ultron’s real threat to destroy the planet certainly gives us a lot of ups and downs. Who will survive? You’ll just have to check out the film to see.
Avengers: Age of Ultron opens in theaters May 1st! I highly recommend checking it out. It’s rated PG-13 and I think that’s a good age break for viewing in the theater (although I’m sure we’ll show the kids at home once out on Blu-Ray.) They’ve seen a few of the other Marvel films, being the super hero-loving family that we are.
